Governor David Paterson’s budget takes lots of money away from nearly every aspect of state spending, but he also put money in his budget for some projects.
One of them is the proposed move and expansion of Cayuga Community College‘s Fulton campus.
Paterson has set aside $8 million to help the college move from its home in the Fulton Commons plaza on the city’s west side to renovated space in the former P&C Foods store in the River Glen Square plaza on the east side. The money would also help the college to build an auditorium on its main campus in Auburn.
The money’s not a given; the state Legislature has to approve the budget first.
In an interview with Oswego County Today in December, college President Daniel Larson said CCC’s Fulton campus filled up faster than they expected. He said the current space offers no room for clubs, no large gathering space, no room for food service and other needed services.
The space at Fulton Commons is rented. Cayuga Community College would own the space at River Glen Square, including at least some commercial space that it does not plan to turn into classroom space right away. Larson said the college would be open to leasing space to retailers.
He said the new space would make the college “masters of our own destiny.”
